Commuter Benefit

Using pretax dollars to pay eligible public transit costs for your work commute helps stretch your paycheck.

Save on Public Transit Expenses

AutoNation’s commuter benefit lets you save on eligible public transportation expenses you incur commuting to and from work. It also helps you save on taxes.

Here’s how the commuter benefit works:

  • Each month, you designate an amount to be withdrawn from your paycheck. The amount you designate is withdrawn before taxes are deducted, which reduces your taxable income.
  • You can change the amount you designate each month or set up a recurring monthly amount.
  • You must place orders by the 10th day of the month for the next month’s benefit. For example, March 10 is the last day to place orders for your April commuting expenses.
  • You can set aside up to $315 per month to cover eligible public transit expenses in 2024.

Two Ways to Pay

Once you designate an amount to be withdrawn from your paycheck, you have two options for purchasing your transit passes:

  • You can purchase a prepaid, reloadable commuter debit card on the online ordering platform and then use it to load transit cards or purchase ride tickets. Your debit card will arrive before the beginning of the following month. You will use the same debit card and reload it with funds to cover your monthly commuter transit expenses.
  • You can purchase these monthly transit passes directly through the online ordering platform:
    • Fare media (single- or multiple-use, traditional paper tickets)
    • Metro cards
    • Smart cards
    • Transit authority card refills
    • Ride ticket books
    • Subscription services

Eligible and Ineligible Commuter Expenses

You can use your commuter benefit to pay eligible commuter expenses, including:

  • Mass transit fares, including bus passes, rail passes, and ferry tickets
  • Vanpool
  • UberX Share (formerly Uber Pool)

You cannot use the commuter program to pay for:

  • Non-work-related commuting expenses
  • Commuting expenses reimbursed by AutoNation
  • Any dependents’ commuting expenses
  • Tolls
  • Fuel
  • Taxis and limousines
  • Parking at or near your workplace
